A telling example from my personal experience involves a colleague turned director, referred to as Sarat, who left a lasting impression on those under his leadership.

The Story of Sarat: A Personal Touch in Leadership

My friend and colleague, Sarat, transitioned from being a regular team member to becoming the Director of the QA group at NFC. Despite the change in roles, he maintained the same friendly demeanour towards me and encouraged others to do the same. He addressed me not as "Sir", which was the normal practice, but remained Swamy, his short name. This personal touch made a significant difference in how his team perceived him and their relationship with him as a leader. Sarat valued intelligence and respected it in his colleagues, drawing the best out of everyone while granting them the freedom to work as long as they remained ethical and delivered results on time. A decade of working under Sarat's leadership inspired trust and confidence, making him the best boss I ever had. However, his untimely retirement as Deputy Chief of the QA group in 2002 marked the end of an era. Sadly, he passed away a few years later, leaving a profound impact on us all.

Recognising and appreciating the hard work and contributions of team members is crucial. An effective boss makes team members feel valued and appreciated, which in turn boosts their motivation and commitment to the organization.

A good boss is aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and this awareness enables them to leverage their strengths effectively while addressing areas that require improvement. They can also provide feedback in a constructive manner, helping their team members grow.
